5 Free Shirts (...and some amazing sports art)

March 10, 2012 | 0 comments »

While I started and run Grinder Threads as a solo operation, there are a lot of moving parts that make everything we do come to life. Believe me when I say that none of this is possible without the blood, sweat and dedication of a lot of other people behind the scenes.

The most critical piece of the GT puzzle is Mark Penxa -  the creative virtuoso behind the Goons, Lake Placid, Checking Line, Wheelhouse, Original Six and Flying Orr designs.

But he is much more than the design guy behind our little hockey label. Aside from his commercial work in the skate and snowboard industries for companies like DC Shoes, Penxa has also delivered the jaw dropping acclaimed sports art series 'Stealing Signs'.

His latest installation - Stealing Signs III - builds upon the momentum of his previous baseball and hockey releases to include a State-by-State journey of the stories and characters that have underpinned sports history. Starting in Pennsylvania, Penxa carves out a series of incredible pieces focused on a journey through the althetic undertones of PA - from Arnold Palmer, to Larry Holmes, to hockey's own Mike Richter and Hobey Baker.

If the art alone is not enough to get you fired up, here's a deal that might just make you tinkle in your paints a little bit:

For the first next three paintings purchased from the Stealing Signs Pennsylvania series, we're going to kick in FIVE FREE GRINDER THREADS SHIRTS. Yessir, that's $114.75 of free Grinder goodness and art that will bring life to your walls and conversations to your man cave.

So checkout the artwork by CLICKING HERE and after you snag your favorite(s) - use the promo code "Grinder" on the stealing signs checkout and shoot us an email at orders (at) (or on the contact page) with the five shirts and sizes you want and'll capitalize on the biggest free giveaway we've ever done.

*Note: Free shirts subject to availability.

Behind The Design: Original Six Hockey T-Shirt

December 21, 2011 | 1 comments »

This is the second post in our ‘behind the design’ series, taking a close look at the Grinder Threads Fall/Winter Hockey T-Shirt Collection. Like our first post on the Flying Orr design, we’re pulling back the curtains to provide an insider look at the Original Six hockey shirt

Hockey is governed by a deep seeded code of honor, respect, and blue collar work ethic. While many professional sports have been tainted with candy-coated commercialization and detached athletes, hockey has managed to stay pretty consistent to its roots.

The ‘Original Six’ shirts (in blue & black) are rooted in this tradition. From 1942 to 1967, a small brethren of warriors graced the ice to define the foundation of pro hockey as we know it today.  Fueled by courage over safety and heart over compensation, the 'Original Six' built a sport upon their backs and defined the role of hockey players in the process.

The design aesthetic for the Original Six was captured from some of the core elements seen in the jerseys of the era. Punchy jersey numbering and texture, pennant flags, and script fonts all pull together to add a vintage feel to the design.

For the Original Six shirt, we chose another one of our ridiculously soft blended materials. An even balance of 50% cotton/50% polyester gives a super soft feel and the waterbased inks blend the design right into the shirt, adding to the vintage texture.  As always, the shirts are tied together with custom hem tags sewn at the bottom of the shirt and screen printed, itch free neck tags.

And with that, the “Original Six Hockey Shirt” was born.

Behind The Design: Flying Orr Hockey T-Shirt

December 03, 2011 | 0 comments »

Ever wonder where our shirt ideas come from?

Well, you're in luck. This is the first of a series of posts taking a closer look at our Fall/Winter Hockey T-Shirt Collection. We're pulling back the curtains to provide a glimpse at the culmination of steps that result in the gear in your closet. In our first installment, we'll be diving into the creation of the Flying Orr design.

Inspiration for the Flying Orr design, while it would appear obvious enough, actually sparked from the 2010-2011 HBO 24/7 series chronicalling the Pens vs Caps Winter Classic. At the conclusion of the four part series - in what can only be described as a truly poetic summary of the game - a particular line single-handedly defined the uniqueness, history, and marvel of our sport.

"Hockey won't hold still for a portrait...."

(See below for a video of the final scene, or a written version here)

With the 'hockey won't hold still for a portrait' prose as a backdrop, the next step was defining a tangible visual that would tie into the concept. Hockey is a game of inches, seconds, and moments frozen in time.  And before long it wasn't hard to land on a metaphor to define the idea.

Forty seconds into overtime on May 10, 1970 - Bobby Orr carved across the ice slipping a series winning golden goal past goalie Glenn Hall. Ending a near three decade long Cup slump for 'Beantown', the 'Orr Goal' became one of the most infamous moments in Stanley Cup history.

Once the concept is locked, the fun part Working with the mind boggling talents of our lead designer a series of sketches, revisions and digital fine tuning begins. Ideas become reality and the vision takes shape.

If you've ever got your paws on a Grinder Threads shirt, hopefully you'll agree that we are absolutely ruthless when it comes to quality. For the Flying Orr shirt, we chose arguably our finest 'tri-blend' cut. Ridiculously soft - a result of the Cotton/Polyester/Rayon combination - the final touches include an itch-free printed neck tag and hand sewn hem tag at the bottom of the shirt.

And with that, "Flying Orr" was born.

November 24, 2011 | 0 comments »

We're baaaccckkkk!!! That's right Grinders, after months of planning we're ready to launch our latest collection - just in time for Christmas.  Starting on Friday November 24, 2011 we will be unleashing a series of new tees, our first hoodie, and our first 3/4 raglan sleeve baseball tee.

As usual, we pushed the limits with the new line - including super soft vintage inks, ridiculously soft fabrics, and fresh hockey designs encompassing the game we love.

See below for a run-down of the new gear:

  • Original Six - a throwback to the good 'ole days when players slugged it out for respect over a paycheck

  • Flying Orr - a homage to the greatest goal ever frozen in time

  • Beer League Hockey - our classic beer league hockey design in a hoodie (check out the hockey lace draw string)

It's been a blast putting this line together and we can't wait to share it with our fans. See you Friday!

Goon Movie Trailer

September 12, 2011 | 0 comments »

It's been a while since a good hockey flick has hit the silver screen. Sure, we've had the heart warming 'Miracle' and the cliche Mighty Duck Disney classics in recent memory but it's been a few decades since we've had a gritty hockey classic like Slap Shot to call our own.

Well, the drought may be over...

After numerous rumblings and speculation dating back to 2009 it looks like "Goon" is close to reality given a recently released trailer touting a 2012 release date. Loosely inspired by minor league enforcer Doug Smith, Goons offers up a not too shaby cast - including Seann William Scott of American Pie fame. Get ready Grinders...this could be a good'er.

Check out the trailer below:

And while you're in the mood, head over to the shop and check out our very own 'Goons' tee:)

Get Ready: Spring/Summer Line Drops 4-21-2011

April 19, 2011 | 1 comments »

Mark your calendar's. In just a few days - on Thursday April 21, 2011 - we will be unleashing our Spring/Summer collection. And just like our previous hockey tees, we haven't pulled any punches.

What can you expect?

Well, if you've picked up any shirts from us you know that we are relentless when it comes to quality. This line is no different. For starters, we will be introducing two new shirt blends: a 50% cotton/50% polyester and a tri-blend 50% cotton/25% polyester/25% rayon vintage black v-neck.  Both are so ridiculously soft that we've already primed  our mailbox for fan mail from your nipples. Okay...maybe not...but you'd be hard pressed to find comfier shirts:) As usual, you'll also find screen printed size tags  (no itchy neck tags) and custom sewn logo tags in the bottom left hem of every shirt.

As for the designs, three new beauties will be joining the Grinder line-up. 'Lake Placid 1980' - a homage to the Gold medal winning USA 'miracle' team; 'Wheelhouse' - a vintage motorcycle inspired design dedicated to the ritual of skate sharpening; and 'Beer League Hockey'  - a toast to all the hosers out there slugging it out in the most camaraderie filled rec sports leagues in the world.

It's been a blast putting this line together and we can't wait to share it with our fans. See you Thursday!
